It's the question every trader asks after a good backtest: how long do I need to paper trade before I put real money behind this? There's no single right answer, but there are clear principles.
Count trades, not just days
What gives you confidence is the number of trades, not the number of calendar days. A strategy that trades five times a day builds a meaningful sample much faster than one that trades twice a week. As a rough rule of thumb, many traders want to see at least 30 trades before reading anything into results, and prefer 100 or more for a strategy they plan to trade seriously.
Cover different market conditions
A month of steady trending markets tells you little about how a strategy handles a choppy or volatile one. The longer and more varied the test, the more likely you've seen the conditions that break it. That's why time still matters: it's the only way to see different regimes.
Watch out for early luck
A strategy that wins its first several trades feels like a discovery. Over a short window, luck and skill look the same. Setting a minimum proving period before you judge a strategy protects you from crowning a lucky streak.
Compare live results with the backtest
Paper trading is also a check on your backtest. If live win rate, average win and loss, trade frequency and drawdown are close to what the backtest predicted, that's a good sign the backtest was realistic. A big gap usually means hidden costs, look-ahead bias or curve-fitting.
- Enough trades for the results to mean something (dozens at least, ideally 100+).
- At least a couple of different market conditions covered.
- Live results broadly in line with the backtest, after costs.
- Drawdown you could actually sit through with real money.
- A plan for position size, a daily loss limit and when to stop.
